The majority of the editing for our video was done by Millie purely because she has the most experience with the software. However, myself and the other two girls also had a go at editing as we all wanted to contribute to the creation of our coursework. In addition to the little bit of editing we did I feel we were all responsible for having a precise eye, commenting when we felt something didn't work or loom quite right. Below are some of the steps we went through to create our video...
The first thing we had to do was grasp some sort of understanding of Final Cut Pro. In order to make sure we had a basic understanding on how to use the software we turned to YouTube in the hope of finding tutorials. However, after looking at the said tutorials we decided on just using iMovie to edit as we already have background knowledge as to how that software works as we used it for our AS coursework. We felt that by using software we already had experience with, the more successful video we will produce.
Obviously, the first few initial steps of editing the video included the more simple edits such as cropping and spliting video clips - this helped us create a more clean and concise timeline.
One form of editing that we featured in our music video was fast paced cuts. The reasoning behind selecting this type of editing was because we wanted to make a statement in our video. Although our chosen song is quite slow, we wanted to include this collection of swift cuts in the hope of brining a new dynamic to the video. In addition, we used the fast cuts as a way of symbolising a flashback of memories. We wanted the scene to almost appear like Nova's life is flashing before her eyes, reinforcing the idea of Nova reflecting on her relationship with her past partner and remembering the happier parts of their relationship. In addition to the fact they were short, fast clips anyway, we used the 'speed' tool to speed them up further - making it look like a more continuous flashback. As you can see from the video above, we only included a few videos within the flashback scene. Originally we had quite a few, however following some dispute we changed it to only a few select clips this is so that it cuts perfectly in time to the lyrics "Hello Hello C-Can You Hear Me". By having the visuals match with the audio, we are presenting a professional looking piece of work and hope that it is satisfying for our audience as it all ties together well and runs smoothly.
We decided that throughout the entirety of our video we wanted a general colour scheme of blues and pinks. Because of this particular choice, we often found ourselves using the colour correction tools in order to achieve our desired colours. We felt that having a general colour scheme would make the video aesthetically pleasing for our audience - we feel that this is important as obviously we want to interest our target audience and want for them to feel at ease whilst watching our video. We chose the colour blue as it is a calming colour, which will be good for our audience however, it is also a colour to represent sadness, which of course relates to the lyrics and meaning of our song. We chose the colour pink as a way of symbolising love which is again, a motif of our song.
Another editing technique we used within our video was slow motion. We feel that slow motion clips express emphasis on particular scenes and makes them stand out as important, representative of Nova's favourite memories with her past lover. Similarly, having some of the clips in slow motion helped them to link to the pace of the song. We made sure we used this technique on multiple clips in our video ensure we had a good sense of continuity.
Some of the clips that we wanted to feature in our video either had too much going on within the background or there were elements within them that were just unnecessary. However, we didn't want to disregard these clips as many of them we felt were very successful despite the distracting backgrounds. In order to still be able to use them and for them to still be effective, we used the 'crop to fill' tool to crop out these elements. We think that this makes our video looks more refined and professional which is most certainly a look we are going for with our video.
