7/10/2015 - Dark Room and The Red Ivy
Within our video we wanted to experiment with projections both video and images. In the first half of this filming session we tried out the image projection.
The first thing we did regarding the projection was print a sunset landscape and a picture of our friend Louis, onto pieces of see-through paper. We wanted to have a boy as one of our projections because it will give the audience an insight as to who the boyfriend of Nova was - It gives him a face and helps the audience to relate.
By putting his image in black and white it makes the image seem more of a memory rather than a recent picture, helping the audience to understand that the couple are no longer together.
However, we wanted to keep the sunset in colour as it gives an artistic flare to our video. Sunsets represent the end of a day and a new beginning therefore, this links to the situation that out artist is in - the end of her relationship and a new beginning as a singleton.
From the videos in the Footage Review below you will notice that we projected some of the images onto Novas bare back, this was to express her vulnerability.
For the second half of this filming day we went out to the red ivy that our school grows
in the hope of getting some lip syncing shots. We felt the red ivy would be an excellent background to film against as it is vibrant, which will immediatly grab the audiences attention. The red also connotes the idea of romance, in this case, recovering from one.
On this particular day the sun was extrmemely bright which caused some issues with the sun getting in Millie's eyes a lot whilst we were filming. However, it was also a good thing that it was sunny as it gave us some amazing lighting to work with. To avoid the possibility of Millie squinting we kept her in the shade. We thought that this time it would be best to lip sync the whole song as a way of covering our backs - by doing this we can chop and choose which bit of the video we want the red ivy to appear in. Personally, I feel that this session was really successful. Millie was very expressive in her facial expressions which helped to convey the emotion behind the song. As planned, we mainly filmed medium wide shots, keeping Millie to one side of the camera and the background on the other side. I filmed a tracking shot of Millie walking in front of the ivy as it faded from green to red. We thought that this would work well as it could connote the idea of falling in or out of love; this is one of the most unique shots we have so far so I have no doubt it will make the final cut of our video.
Costume
We decided that Millie should wear a plain black top and a tanned suede skirt for this scene - this was because we didn't want any colours that would take away from the background. In addition, we wanted to express the concept of a long relationship in our video and so we thought that a tanned coloured skirt would be really good for representing autum as brown is an autumnal colour. Millie's hair for this scene was straight as we wanted her to look as natural as possible.
Review of footage
This is a clip of the tracking shot that we filmed by the red ivy. As you can see, the fade of colours looks great with the mise en scene of Nova. Once this clip is cropped, I feel it will look really effective and will make a nice addition to our video. The only thing I can criticise about this clip is that some of Millie's hair hides her face meaning that sometimes you cannot see her clearly. However, I don't feel this is such an issue to the point that we need to get rid of the clip.
This is one of our most unsuccessful clips. I feel as though Nova does not portray the type of image we would lime her to portray. The lighting is quite grey yet simultaneously too bright - In conclusion it just isn't the type of clip we want to include in our video.
