Filming day 6 - Margate

14/10/2015 - Margate

We chose Margate as our sixth location for numerous reasons. The first being that it is a nearby seaside town and so we thought we could gather some more scenes by the sea. Secondly, Margate is known for having good arcades, which is something we would like to incorporate into our video in some way.

We began our day by filming in a small café which was located just opposite a stretch of the sea. This café had a really nice shabby chic, vintage look to it, which we felt fit in with the look we were going for in our video and with Nova's style. The café also had a sentimental feel to it, which we felt was useful for us and the motif of our video as a large part of it is based on reminiscing on the happy memories that the couple had together. I felt that the café location was really effective for us seeing as it matched other footage we have gathered visually, connecting the locations together. We also filmed little sections of the cafe to use as filler shots if need be, we managed to film some small focus pulls that I feel will help us create a more sophisticated finished product.

For the next part of the day we made a trip to The Turner Contemporary Art Gallery. Seeing as it is a gallery filled with contemporary, interesting art we thought that we would be able to gain some intriguing shots. I feel that our visit was successful as the gallery had a variety of interesting materials we could feature in our video such as projectors, coloured light sources and televisions. We found this location to be extremely useful in attaining point of view shots as it allowed for the camerawoman to follow Nova around without any interruption, making it seem as if the boyfriend was following her, this gives the audience a more personal insight to the couple's life and the types of days they spent together.

After we got a sufficient amount of shots in the gallery we proceeded out onto the seafront so that we could get some good lip sycning shots. On our way over we stopped at a sweet shop and by a mural to get some extra little bits that we can use in our music video. When we got to the sea front Millie changed her top so that we have a variety of outfits running through the video. All of us remaining girls took it in turn to film and made sure to use the tripod for extra stability as the weather was extremely windy - again, we ensured to film Millie just off centre to match in with previous footage that we have and to get a lovely pale blue sky as the background in a large amount of our shots.

For the last part of a very long day, we made a visit to the arcades. Here we were able to get a vast amount of point of view footage. We made as though he couple were playing games agasint eachother; we felt that filming indoors in a place with bright lights would give us some more unique footage that would make a difference from some of the more simplistic footage we have. We took inspiration for this location from Lana Del Rey's 'Ride' video, in which she has a lot of scenes in an arcade.

Costume

The outfit that Millie wore for all but one scene was a dark grey, one shoulder jumper with a black crop underneath. She paired this with black jeans and converse - this was to show the winter part of their realtionship. Again, we chose dull colours to fit with the edgy look that Nova has.  For the scene that required a different outfit, Millie changed into a white ripped crop, this was to link back to other outfits she had previously worn.

Review of footage

Above is some of the lip syncing scenes that we filmed; unfortunately you cannot hear the music due to the wind. We decided to film the chorus up against a mural that conveyed a range of bright colours, this gave off an artistic vibe and links in nicely with the colours we have previously featured in previous filming days. I feel that this background is very successful as I feel that connotes the idea that Nova is interested in the country in which she lives (the mural is a timeline of Margate's history). This presents her as a good role model to her younger fans. The only thing I feel doesn't work quite as well in this clip is the complexion of Millie's skin, it is quite red after being battered by the cold wind. However, this can be easily rectified when editing, we will use the colour correction tool to make her look warmer.

This is one of the more candid shots that we filmed; Kate thought that this window in the café would be good to film due to the Volkswagen parked up directly outside. Also, the natural lighting allowed the shot to be illuminated. I think that this particular shot will be successful once it is placed in amongst the music and other clips. I do feel however that a more successful shot would be one of Millie pointing at the car, this would create a more personal feel toward the video as we would see Nova's excitement which would give us an insight into her playful personality.
