Filming day 3 - Faversham

13th September 2015 - Faversham

For our third day of filming we travelled down to Faverhsam due to its more naturistic locations and calming vibes.

The first location that we went to to film was a lovely, quiet creek that had many long walking paths. We took advantage of this for our lip syncing scenes. We came up with the idea of Nova walking toward the camera in her lip syncing scenes, with the camera moving backwards, tracking her movements - this would fit our video as we want majority of the scenes to be in the point of view of Nova's partner, therefore by having Nova walk toward the camera it looks as if she is singing directly to her partner. In reflection I feel that the creek was a very effective location as the greenary surrounding it is soemthing we would love to have as a running theme throughout our video. Similarly, the wide open space gave us a lot of scope for both, mid and wide shots.

As a group we were eager to experiment with different angles and shots. We made sure to take advantage of this location due to the mass amount of space that was made available to us. Similarly, the bright natural light gave us an opporutnity to get some lense flares within our footage. We feel that these were really effective as they made our work look a lot more professional, using natural resources. We managed to get a range of lense flares so when it comes to editing, we are able to evaluate which ones we feel are best to use. Whilst filming at the creek we had to overcome some issues. The first being that the tripod we took had some parts missing. To overcome this, Evie decided to hold the camera still ontop of the tripod, this gave us the height of the tripod that we wanted just not the stability. The second issue we enountered was the issue of the battery life of the cameras. It lost battery very quickly which left us without charge in a natural environment  and obviously, there were not any plug sockets to charge it up. However, we didn't let this affect us too much. Instead, we made sure we knew exactly what shots we wanted so we could film them at a later date if necessary . We checked the footage afterwards to make sure we got what we needed. Unfortunately, these few issues did restrict the quantity of footage that we attained however we feel with a bit of clever editing we can make it work.

Fortunately, Evie has some relatives that live in Faversham. They live a mere 10 minute walk away from the creek so we went to visit them in order to charge up the camera for the next half of our filming. They live on a farm, meaning there was a lot of open space available to us again. We were able to use this space to our advantage and get lots of interesting scenes. We got a real variety of shots including some on haybales, establishing shots of the sunset, and medium asthetic shots of Nova. This location was exceptionally successful as the natural lighitng created many lense flares and the amount of space we had to use allowed us to be creative and artistc without many limitations.

At this location we were able to build our own bonfire. We wanted to create a scene that connoted a sense of reflection on the couple's good memories of their own bonfire, including them partaking in activities such as lighting sparklers and dancing together. Although we wanted to use the bonfire primarily for happier memories, we also decided to film some close ups of the flames as a way of symbolising the burning love that Nova has for her boyfriend. This could come accross as quite emotive as it expresses the fact that she loves a  boy who no longer cares for her. The connotations of fire are subjective which gives the audience the ability to draw their own conclusions of the footage. The picture I have inserted  to the left is a still from some of the footage we got on this day. As you can see the colours are profound. This makes a pleasant change in our video as a majority of the colours are soft blues and pinks so by including a harsh orange in our video, we are offering a sense of variety making it more entertaining for our audience. One downside of this juxtaposition is that it does break the continuity within our video. However, during the editing process we can do some colour correcting to make it look more like the other clips used.

The fact that we were filming a bonfire meant we had to consider the time of day that we filmed at due to the lighting. Although we needed it to be dark enough for the fire to be seen clearly, we also needed enough light to ensure the footage wouldn't turn out grainy. To ensure we got the right type of lighting we researched what time the sunset for this day would be which was around 8pm. After reviewing the footage, I can say that this worked out as a good time for us to film as the footage did not turn out grainy and the fire also showed up well. The idea of filming a variety of shots such as high angles of the fire that panned up proved to be successful as it appeared as though we had created our own motif of panning up. This is something I feel that we should incorporate more into our video as a way of including our own personal touch.

Costume

For this filming day Nova had two outfits - one for the daytime scene and one for the after noon.

For the daytime scene, we felt that Nova should look almost casual due to the natural setting. With this being said, we decided Nova should wear a grey cowl neck, bat winged jumper with black jeans and black calf boots - we wanted to stick with monotone colours as it fits in with the alternative genre. For the afternoon outfit, we wanted to stick with the 'farm girl' theme so Millie kept the black boots on however, she changed her outfit to dark grey jeans with a black crop top which she partnered with a long black waistcoat that gads fringing on the bottom, this fringing gives Nova a boheemian look, which is something we  stated we wanted Nova to express.

Review of Footage

The above clip shows you one of the many lense flares we managed to get. This shot is a wide off centre shot, with Nova on a hay-bale to the right, this is to match the lipsynching we done in Whistable. I feel that the lense flares in this shot work really well they make the shot look more artistic, which is something we were aiming for - the flares are also red, this will help us symbolise both love and hatred, which are themes that come accross in our chosen song. I personally, cannot fault the collection of lense flares we got as I feel that is shows our skills both technologically and artistically.

This clip is a tracking shot of Nova lip syncing part of the chorus - I think this shot is really effective as not only does it show the audience a large part of the location it also makes them feel as if Nova is walking towards them, this is significant as it makes the audience feel as if they are invovled in the video and Nova's life.
